IME BECAS is a fellowship program committed to elevate the educational level of first generation Hispanics. It is focused on supporting schools, parent centers and nonprofit organizations that offer programs for Hispanic immigrants such as basic literacy courses, preparation for the GED, computer skills classes and English classes.
The mission of IME BECAS is to provide opportunities for adult immigrants and students from immigrant families to develop useful skills to better participate in United States work environment, as well as to open possibilities to access adult education and colleges in the United States.
Since its inception, IME BECAS has already supported around 20,000 students form different Latin-American countries and volunteer teachers in the U.S and has proven to be a truly successful initiative. In Oregon, more than 10 organizations like Centro Cultural of Washington County and Hacienda CDC have become recipients of IME BECAS funds. The funds are not limited to Mexican immigrants although it remains as the main target of the program.
Sabor a Mexico is part of a nation wide fundraising campaign organized through the network of 50 Mexican Consulates with the support of thousands of local sponsors like the Mexican Restaurant Association (MERA), Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield, Hispanic Pros of Portland and pdxlatino.com.
This great effort seeks to increase the available amount of funds in order to support a greater number of organizations this year and continue with its mission of improving the education of Latino immigrants.
